No Stranger to Adversity

Daryl Scott was born and raised in Conway, SC. Growing up, he was no stranger to hardship as he was born into a single-parent household on welfare. His mother worked as cleaning staff at a hotel in Myrtle Beach when the area was just developing. Like many other black workers in the community, she was paid under the table. Daryl grew up during the peak of the Civil Rights Movement. His class of students was the second class to experience integration and in his 2nd grade year, he transitioned into a fully integrated elementary school. While Daryl’s early years were filled with much financial and social instability, he credits his community in Conway as the village that supported him and his family and shaped him into the person he is today. Mr. Scott is a proud graduate of Conway High School, where he participated in NJROTC, Future Farmers of America, and played soccer as well as competing in track and field.

A Career of Service

Following his graduation in 1984, Mr. Scott enlisted in the South Carolina Army National Guard. There, he began his active duty military career, ascending to the rank of Sergeant in the National Guard, then 2nd Lieutenant in the Armor Corps, and on May 24, 1988, he received his commission. During his service, Mr. Scott coordinated with the South Carolina Governor’s request for federal approval under the Posse Comitatus Act to aid in hurricane, flood, and other natural disaster readiness. He received numerous accolades, honors, and medals for my service both abroad and at home in the United States. Major Daryl Scott has served a combined total of 24 years in the South Carolina National Guard, Active Army, and the Army Guard Reserve.

Always Striving for More

While serving in the National Guard, Daryl Scott received a scholarship to help fund his education and chose to attend Morris College.
